“There’s a threat in the world today; a threat to our way of living a threat to our society and maybe even a threat to our very existence…". Homophobia, misogyny, promiscuity, lack of morality, racism, violence, materialism: gangsta rap. Although it had been declared “dead” by one of its creators back in 1995, an album released a year later, beginning with the words quoted above, proved that the most notorious music genre was still alive. Hundreds of hardcore rap LPs have been produced since then, several of which were claimed to have the same “gangsta thang” going on. Fans of the genre worldwide didn’t seem to agree. Even the same group’s following works didn’t live up to the expectations and the 1996 LP is considered by many the last trace of true gangsta rap. Ten years later, an individual decided it’s time to bring some gangsta flavor back in the underground. The goal was to catch the original vibe from back then, reform and re-present it in a modern package, as a tribute to gangsterism. And thus, “Bow Down” was reborn. The threat is once again in the world…
